Volunteer at the Torrance Art Museum

Volunteers are essential to the museum’s mission. TAM volunteers are integral to the presentation and production of its innovative and ambitious programing. It is a rewarding opportunity to give back to the community and facilitate public engagement with the Arts. An art background is not required in order to volunteer at TAM, only an interest in learning about it. For those interested in generously donating their time to support the mission of Torrance Art Museum there are two volunteer opportunities:

  • Docent: This volunteer position is the first point of contact for museum visitors and general public. They help field a variety of inquiries and provide information about the exhibitions, programs, and services presented by the museum. They ensure that attendance to the museum is tracked and that visitors sign in and adhere to museum policies.

    • Requirements: Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with culturally diverse audiences. Work well with public. Ability to sit for 3 hours. Commit to 2 shifts per month while exhibits are open.

  • Assistant Preparator: This volunteer position supports the museum’s preparatory department staff in the de/installation of exhibitions. They play an important role in the preparation of gallery walls for installation, maintaining cleanliness, organization, and facilities maintenance.

    • Requirements: Familiar and safe handling of basic tools. Good at following directions. Ability to stand and perform physical tasks for 3 hours. Position can involve climbing up ladders and lifting up to 50lbs.
