PRIMITIVE STRUCTURES

june 4-25, 2022

A solo show of paintings by artist Theodore Svenningsen.

“This ongoing series depicts structures that one would come upon in a primeval forest; structures that we would be unable to determine by whom they were constructed, or what their function had been. Narratives of inexplicable stories exist in the paintings. Mysterious figures of unknown origin, and objects that are not quite what they seem to be, make appearances.

Engagement with the paintings in this series bring about a cognitive state of affairs by a bifurcation of experience and interpretation which is caused by the introduction of various formal elements into the paintings. Picture planes are purposefully made undefined, resulting in an ambiguity of location.

The world of the Primitive Structures is in many ways parallel to the one in which we live, a world which is never distinctly present, where there are aspects and goings on around us that we cannot detect.” — Theodore Svenningsen
