Artist Statement: 

Psychostasia (The Weighing of the Souls) 

The weighing of souls (Ancient Greek: Psychostasia) is a metaphysical concept in which a person’s life is assessed by weighing their soul immediately before or after death, or alternatively on the battlefield to judge their fate 

The concept of weighing to judge the fate of the deceased originated in ancient Egypt around 2,400 BC, where the deceased’s heart was weighed on a scale against a feather. The soul in Ancient Egypt was thought to be immortal; an eternal being whose stay on earth was only one part of a much larger and grander journey. This soul was said to consist of nine separate parts; the physical body, the double form, a bird form which traveled between earth and heaven, a shadow self, an immortal, transformed self, the heart source of both good and evil, and the soul name. An afterlife was denied those who were judged unworthy. 

Native American tribes often believed in more than one human soul. The Atlantic Northeast tribes believed there was one soul that worked when the body was asleep and another soul that would leave the body after death. When the body was asleep, the dream soul would roam, often appearing as a light, and seek out guardian spirits. The other soul was located near the heart and was the individual’s animating force. 

The Psychostasia project investigates the essence of the contemporary human soul within the context of its cultural identity.

Watching Alison Woods’s transition from meticulous, rigorous and incredibly detailed  two-dimensional work to these airy, light, loose, and ghost-like sculptures made of found materials certainly  spoke to me in the first place! These loose and playful forms  were first created in Greece for a site-specific project  and have continuously evolved upon her return to her country.  

The  Psychostasia  sculptural series also  connect with me in a mystical and spiritual  way:   

I see ancient Greek  columns as if they want to connect past and present.   

I see fallen angels as  if  they  want  to  remind  me  that our existence is in-between the physical and the metaphysical; that matter is not only what is seen  right  now, but it is the accumulation of what we carry through our time(s) on this earth.  

I see spirits in co-existence with matter. 

I see the in-between state of our beings, trying to realize the essence of our existence.  

I see how ancient Egyptian and Greek  histories  are translated to  pagan  and  contemporary  religions, connecting us all with African, Native American, or  Oriental memories as if we carry them all and as if everyone includes everyone at once.  

I feel the moment when soul departs from the body taking it to other dimensions through light.  

I wonder if my heart will  ever be weighed on a scale against a feather and will be worshiping for an afterlife.

Statement on Work:

Photo News is a film created from a daily Instagram project (photonews5). From Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2019,  a digital photo-collage was created by reshooting a photograph and its accompanying headline from that days print newspaper and posting it to Instagram. The entire headline serves as the Instagram caption, while the collage has only a fragment of that text. Though referencing actual events, these images can be read as poetic fragments, that embrace ambiguity while simultaneously allude to world news. These images were later sequenced into a video that cycles through each image at 3 seconds per image. A score composed by David Scheffler enhances the images adding a haunting and enigmatic aura to the work. The haunting landscapes resonate with respect to today's isolation and empty cities.

Redacted is from a series called, "The Nightmare Catcher," and is the piece that contains the imagery and patterns of a recurring dream that often results with me waking to my own muffled screams.

This piece hung in a larger arrangement  in last year's, "Woven Stories," at MOAH Lancaster. I chose to submit, "Redacted," by itself for Hobson's Choice because of the current quarantine/plague-like reality that we are living with. There is an opportunity somewhere in the monotony of the day-to-day repetitions and slowing down that we are collectively experiencing that reminds me of this piece.

In selecting this image, I own up to the freedom I feel while under corona lockdown—the freedom to take risks and make connections through my studio practice. Without deadlines and self-pressure to be out there making connections, I have been able to dive into the depths of my creative impulse. It was while watching b&w Vincent Price and Orson Wells movies that I realized that I am finding peace in the macabre, the art-horror genre. I embraced my love of the style and reflected on my experiences as a teenager in Las Vegas. The people-watching, thousands of tourists, strangers, their body language, and facial expressions repeated as they walked through casinos, hotel shops, and the strip. Since then, I have been obsessed with the inspiration that comes from appearances and psychological impressions that I perceive when people-watching.  Dystopian Lullaby is a collection of paintings influenced by the art-horror genre presenting relationships in gothic settings. The composition and palette lead to the larger existential experience.  Cluster 3 is an example of the dual nature of the solitary self who lives within clusters. Groups of clusters passing through each other. Herds.

My recent work documents a personal artistic struggle, between the urge to make gestural marks guided by intuition, versus the more neurotic impulse to refine, correct, and erase. The former I consider to be an underlying drive which I’ve tried to coax myself to embrace, while I regard the latter as an essential tool that can quickly become an impediment.

While this painting trades in many of the same visual tropes that I’ve tended to geek out on—flatness versus depth, suspended movement, indeterminate space, mark as figure—I’m pleased to have tempered some of my more typically angular, hard-edged tendencies, to allow looser strokes and more organic forms to emerge: tendons, joints and limbs, strange chambers, and all manner of sopping viscera.

Seen from the air, things familiar on earth’s surface become puzzling glyphs that convey unremitting, if not always legible, human design on the landscape. These multipart paintings zoom out from geological survey maps to blunt grid-like patterns suggested by urban and industrial configurations. Disassembled and reassembled all wrong, the black grids are a shaky attempt to bind the whole together—ground, formal composition and the world in general.
